150th Anniversary Battle of Blountville, Tennessee: September 6-8, 2013

Join us for the 150th Anniversary Battle of Blountville reenactment, in Blountville, TN on Sept. 6-8, 2013. This is a growing event and is fast becoming a draw for reenactors throughout the region.  Also, this event is part of an effort to establish a park to commemorate this battle, including a visitor’s center, interpretive markers and other displays. When completed, the park will feature audio-visual aids, films, early photographs, maps, scale models and authentic artifacts found in the area. This park is intended to promote the history of Blountville and Sullivan Co., and to preserve sites connected to the battle.

Any information/directions can be found at www.battleofblountville.com

Efforts to establish a Battle of Blountville Military Park has support in the state legislature, and the Town of Blountville’s downtown area is on the  National Register of Historic Sites. Please join us in supporting the efforts to preserve and protect the Civil War heritage of the area.

East Tennessee History Fair wrap-up

Thanks to the 79th members who came out to support the unit and take part in the history fair downtown Knoxville this past Saturday, Aug 17.  Thanks to Tom, Lance, Shane, Kelly, Dewey, Kevin, Zach and Matt , ( and me, your helpful page admin ). We spoke to a lot of people and I think helped a lot of people better understand the history of our area and of the 79th.  One of the biggest hits?  Hardtack, that hard cracker that everyone seemed to point out first.  Rather importantly, I think that we also gained some potential new recruits to our unit, and to our  hobby as well. It was very encouraging to see young people interested in history and eager to learn about their past from not only us, but from the other time period reenactors and demonstrators as well.  Thanks to the East Tennessee History Center for having us, and to all the folks who stopped by our “encampment”.
